We’re thrilled to welcome Travis Anderson as the new Head Age Group Coach at Foxjets Swim Team! Travis’ expertise in skill development and his dedication to values like family, ambition, attitude, and integrity make him a great fit for our team.
Can you tell us a bit about your background in swimming and coaching?
I’ve been involved in sports my entire life, with a significant focus on swimming. In high school, I was a multiple-time state qualifier, earned three varsity letters, and served as team captain in my senior year. I continued my passion for swimming through water polo and club swimming at ASU. My journey led me to Masters swimming, where I achieved multiple national top 10 finishes both individually and as part of relay teams.
My career as a swim coach began in 2004, teaching swim lessons and coaching summer Rec swim teams for the City of Scottsdale. In 2009, I transitioned to volunteer coaching with Scottsdale Aquatic Club, which evolved into an assistant coach role. From 2013 to 2015, I was the Head Coach at Notre Dame Prep High School. I also served as the Head Age Group Coach at Phoenix Swim Club from 2014 to 2018, and at Edina Swim Club from 2018 to 2020. Most recently, I began working with Foxjets as a highly skilled youth swim coach.
What are your main priorities as you step into this new role?
My priorities as the Head Age Group Coach for Foxjets align with the team’s core values of family, attitude, ambition, and integrity. I’m focused on ensuring comprehensive athletic development for every swimmer. My approach is to build confidence and help swimmers develop a positive attitude and a growth mindset. These qualities will encourage them to embrace challenges with enthusiasm, nurture their ambition, and grow into well-rounded athletes. It’s also crucial to emphasize integrity—both in and out of the pool.
As the new Head Age Group Coach, I am committed to integrating these values across all groups in the age group swim program, ensuring that each swimmer feels supported throughout their swimming journey.
Can you share some of your coaching philosophies and approaches?
My coaching philosophy emphasizes a solid technical foundation in swimming. I focus on skill development that prioritizes injury prevention and long-term success. I use evidence-based coaching and data-driven training to guide my decisions, set goals, and track progress. Each swimmer is unique, so I customize training to their individual needs. Additionally, I incorporate dryland training to enhance overall athletic development, improving strength and flexibility to boost performance in the pool.
What are some of your goals for the Foxjets age group program?
My goal is to build on the strengths of the Foxjets Age Group program while ensuring our core values remain central to everything we do. I also aim to improve the consistency of skill development across all groups and enhance our use of metrics to track progress and set goals. Ultimately, I want to create a supportive, positive environment where every swimmer can thrive.
How can parents and the Foxjets community support you and the swimmers?
Parents and the Foxjets Swim Team community can support the coaching staff by reinforcing the guidance provided, encouraging swimmers to stay motivated, and prioritizing participation in practices and meets. Constructive feedback is always welcome, and volunteer support is invaluable to the success of the program. Together, we can ensure that every swimmer achieves their full potential.
